When I gave Lakesongs Of Elbid (2024, see review), the first album by British Folk/Prog/Metal band Albion its first spin I was blown away. That was in January 2024 and I was convinced it would become my album of the year. And it did! The band performed their first concert outside of the UK in Alphen a/d Rijn and that was my concert of the year (see review).

Now there is the second album It Was In The Month Of May. For a lot of bands the second album is always difficult. But not for Albion! I'm sure this album will be my album of the year of 2026. That good!. It Was In The Month Of May might be a a bit less heavy, a bit more folky and certainly more flute driven, but it's again a masterpiece. Joe Parrish-James (ex Jethro-Tull) wrote all the songs, plays guitars, flute and sings. His sister Rhiannon Parrish-James adds wonderful second vocals, while Jack Clark (now Jethro Tull's guitarist) is also a master on guitar (and backing vocals), Peter Szypulski is a phenomenal bass player, while Ollie Medlow is the drummer bands would love to have in their lineup.

The album starts with the beautiful Mis Mai. Eldest (Tom Bombadil), the first single, is about the figure of Lord Of The Rings and is simply awesome. Calan Mai is a stunning closing song. But hey, all 8 songs are exceptionally written and the musicianship equals that.

Joe Parrish-James sings better than ever, and his flute playing is superb. Combined with his writing talent he reaches the quality of Jethro Tull in the era of Heavy Horses and Songs From The Wood.

You would think, because Joe and Jack were/are Tull members, the influence would be huge. But I (being a big Jethro Tull fan) can assure you that Albion is totally original. They have their own style and I love it. Yep, album of the year. Again!
