Grus Paridae is a new Finnish progressive rock collective consisting of only two members, namely Petteri Kurki and Rami Turtiainen. hey released their debut single Passes By just recently.

On this two track CD single, they both played all the instruments you can hear, except for the violin parts and some of the guitar parts. Those were done by Jarno Koivunen. Besides playing on instruments such as guitars, synths, basses, Petteri and Rami also did all the vocals, drum-programming and composing.

With only two compositions to listen to, it isn't easy to label their musical style. The title track and Inheritance Of Devotion both are tracks that are rather laidback. The leading roles on both pieces, are the electric guitars and the violin. I had to play this ten minute release several times to discover in which direction I could pigeon-hole them. To be honest, I still have problems to tell you which acts might have influenced or inspired them. Traces of Pink Floyd are certainly present, thanks to the guitar and vocal parts. A band like Anathema came to mind as well, however, I believe listeners might come up with other names.

I guess you don't have to have musical heroes to make interesting music, which Grus Paridae certainly did on Passes By. Hopefully this duo will reveal more of their influences on their next releases, and will they continue making rather strong sounding progressive rock music. Good luck to both musicians in their future projects. They already made for a good start with Passes By.
