Finnish band Khatsaturjan, named after the famous Russian-Armenian classical composer Aram Khachaturian, continues on their third album Disconcerto Grosso their eclectic mix of styles. Opener A Rhyme Of A Dime has more than a whiff of the second incarnation of the famous Dutch band Kayak, the one with the female vocalist and also the version I don’t like. This means the band has a rather theatrical sound with much grandeur. In other tracks references can be made to their compatriots of Overhead because, just as with this band, it’s difficult to get a grip on the music which is whimsical, has many breaks, but on the other hand has nice instrumental passages as well. In the end Disconcerto Grosso reminded me too much of a musical and I don’t like that kind of work: too much singing and not enough instrumental displays. This is a shame, because the few glimpses we get of the musicians, the more we want more. Maybe next time?
