Wisdom Trip is a band from Poland and consists of Jakub Zuber who plays guitar and sings, Milan Rabij who is drumming and Grzegorz Grychtol who is playing bass. The band was formed in 2014 and made the record Era Kamienia. Nakręcany Czlowiek is there second album. I won't keep you in suspense any longer, let's go to the music, that's what it's all about. Dryf 1 is the album opener. It is an introduction song to the album. What you hear are a lot of sounds, culminating and not telling that much. It is purely your imagination in what you hear in this four minutes. You can hear a kind of building up of the song. A computer voice says something, but it is in Polish. After that it is a potpourri of heavier sounds. For me the intro takes too long. Nakręcany Człowiek is the second song on the album and the first real song for me. It starts as if someone is falling into your house, but that is okay! What immediately stands out is that the rhythm section is top notch. As the song title already indicates, we have a Polish singer. It takes a little to get used to the Polish language, but it is certainly not unpleasant. The guy has a sound that makes things really clear, there's no getting around it. I really like clear people. The song title means the wind-up man, a better song title was not imaginable if you hear the man singing. Musical wise there is a big role for the guitarplayer and singer, Jakub Zuber. He can really play on his guitar, nice solo's and solid, supportive work from the rhythm section. Sometimes the playing of Jakub reminds me of Richie Kotzen. Kołowrót is the next one. The title means turnstile. This one is an instrumental. It is nice to hear the synchronicity between the rhythm section and the guitar now and then. Also in this song the guitar is the main instrument. What can Jakub play, just great! He has a lot of styles and shows a lot of them in this song. This song is more like a jam, it's a pity that it stops after near five minutes. Then it is the turn for Kołyska Chwały - Absurd. This time I do hear Rush in the music when it starts. Some later it sounds like Wisdom Trip again. If I had to describe the music, it sounds like someone having to tiptoe through life—that's often what the guitar sounds like. Sometime later it is a rock song again with a lot of distorted guitars, although the guitar solo is out of this world again. Decyzje Frustrata (The Frustrated Man's Decisions). The song opens a bit ominous on the guitar, you do not know where the song is going to, as if it is a decision of a frustrated man. This time the guitar sounds more like bluesy and jazzy style for a while. It is all really calm and takes the time until there is a bit of an eruption that keeps you focused. It is all a prelude to the keyboard, which we hear for the first time on this record. None other than former Dream Theater keyboard player Derek Sherinian plays a really beautiful role in the song here. You can recognize his playing among thousands and fits perfectly, although the lack of keys in the other songs is totally okay. Towards the end it is more heavy, nice! Dlaczego Jesteś Tu? is next and means why are you there? And is a nice title for a track. After a calm start the guitars explode in a Rush-style. This song rocks from left to right with clear singing of Jakub and another time a fantastic rhythm section. It is a good song to close the album, although there is a second part of Dryf that is the real ending of the album. This time it is a song of a close two minutes where you can hear rippling guitar work interwoven with some keyboard elements. So the album fades away. And after that it is time for a conclusion. After hearing the album for the first time, I had the idea that this one was not intended for me. But when I listened more and more to the album, it was growing on me. I think the album has a few surprises because of the original creatures of the members. I can not pigeonhole it and that is good. What stands out is that these guys are playing for a long time together, you can hear that in the music. One complaint is the length of the album, that is only 30 minutes. ***+ Michel Stolk (edited by Tracy van Os van den Abeelen) Where to buy? |
