In 2012 the former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett recorded Genesis Revisited, part 2 (see review). This was a fabulous album featuring 21 old tracks written by Genesis and Hackett and performed by famous musicians like Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree, Blackfield), Roine Stolt (The Flower Kings, Transatlantic), Neal Morse (Transatlantic), Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth) and Steve Rothery (Marillion), amongst others. Hackett went on tour and during this tour he also performed in a sold-out Hammersmith Apollo in London. For those who haven't been there, you can now enjoy this show on three CDs and two DVDs.
The evening of the 10th of May 2013, the band consisted of Nad Sylvan (vocals), Lee Pomeroy (bass guitar, twelve-string guitar), Roger King (keyboards), Gary O'Toole (drums, vocals) and Rob Townsend (saxophone, flute). During this gig they were supported by a couple of guest musicians who also played on both Genesis Revisited albums. The set list of this gig is just amazing! To me the absolute highlights are The Musical Box, Supper's Ready - with a running time over 27 minutes! - and Firth Of Fifth, which are three classic Genesis songs that I never get bored of listening to.
Some other favourite Genesis songs of mine like Dance On A Volcano, Los Endos and I Know What I Like , which can also be found on the superb live album Seconds Out (1977), sound slightly different, but are still breathtaking. Although the show features nineteen tracks, I still miss a couple of Genesis beauties like Squonk, The Knife and The Cinema Show. But why am I complaining? This is just a great box by Steve Hackett and a must have for Genesis fans all over the world. Hackett celebrates this music without prejudice and boundaries; he just plays it the way he likes. Great stuff! I loved it from the beginning until the end! Unfortunately we didn't get a copy of the DVDs, so I can't make any remarks about those images!
