PROJECTiON

September 16, 2016 - Theater Astoria, Winterswijk

For most musicians a dream comes true when they can release a professional CD. Even more when they at first performed songs from other acts in several cover bands and later on wrote their own compositions. This is also the story of the Dutch band PROJECTiON. A four piece unit that released their excellent debut Realitivity (see review) in 2015. Strangely enough it took a while before they could present it to their audience with a proper CD release party. I guess the addition of a lead singer with a great voice and a personality on stage was the reason that several months later another dream for them came true, performing their concept album in its entirety. For this special moment they had chosen the historic Theater Astoria in Winterswijk, a place not so far from their home town Varseveld.

Of course I was very curious how they would present their concept album in front of a live audience. How would they visualize a story about life and those who handle the pressures of everyday life. With the resources that were present they managed to do wonderfully well. At first a large screen with the cover of the album was projected in front of the band. A voice-over told the audience about you and the meaning of life. At the same time some important words in our daily life went on and off on the screen. Then the screen disappeared and the album intro could be heard from a tape. An alarm clock went off and the musicians woke up and started to play on their instruments for the very first time. You could certainly hear that their nerves were not always under control and some minor mistakes were made during Running Through Time. But that didn't really matter, because the band acted very energetic and got everything under control during the next track The Expectation Cell. A big screen at the back of the stage showed pictures from the CD booklet. The person who got most of the attention was without doubt new lead singer Herman Wiggers. Strangely enough I couldn't help thinking about Galahad's lead singer Stu Nicholson when I watched him. He even looks a bit like him, but above all he turned out to be a real entertainer just like Galahad's front man. The most important fact was that he is gifted with an

amazing voice. The other members have very strong voices as well and even the rhythm section, consisting of bassist Jurgen ten Have and drummer Richard Immink, turned out to be great singers. Most of all it was the excellent guitarist Frank van Eerden who did some strong lead vocals on some tracks. A nice resting point during the set was the ballad Stranded. During this song Wiggers was sitting on a stool, holding a burning candle in his hand while singing, accompanied by guitarist Frank van Eerden and keyboard player Peter Pampiermole. After the happy ending tune Off: A New Beginning Van Eerden spoke to the audience., saying they had come to the end of the show and it was time to say goodbye. Just put your TV back on your head and start all over again. Also put the CD on repeat with the final track On (Again).

But it wasn't over yet. When the band asked if we wanted more they once again did the fine up tempo tune Running Through Time, but this time around without the minor mistakes. I guess the nerves were gone and they could do it just like they had in mind.

Looking back at this CD release show I can only be positive. The band was in great shape and you could tell they had gone through many rehearsals to do the best they could. Although the large crowd in front of them sometimes could not stop talking during the band's performance they reacted very positive to what the people on stage had achieved. Therefore a show of hands was very much in place all the way through!
