Timelock

January 29, 2023 - 't Blok, Nieuwerkerk a/d IJssel (NL)

It was 29th of January that progressive rock band Timelock climbed the stage again at Progfrog 't Blok in Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel after so many years.

With eight persons they entered the scaffold with two keyboard players and two female singers Laura Eradus and Coby van Oorschot next to the lead singer Ruud Stoker. Timelock founded in The Haque started in 1992 with their first album Louise Brooks. This album has now been remastered with help of Freya Records. It all led to a new second life for Timelock.

Looking from the audience we looked at the monster synth Moog One which started with ambient sounds at the first song starting. The Great Cover Up Story Part 1 Time slips Away warmed up the afternoon with nice natural stringsounds ending with a lush piano outro. In the next songs Emotional Target and Chasing Echoes we met the musicianship of the band more in a proggy way like the solid drummer, multiple singers in the band, band playing different time signatures. And of course the guitar being played in that style. In other words the prog factor raised.

The song Crazy Life told us how strange the world can be, this time sang together by the female background singers. Quietly the song started but ended up with a nice synth solo. We were waiting for that with such gear. In the meantime the drummer Rob Boshuizen evolved in the next songs again as a metaculously crafted drummer and having noticed this in the middle of the concert there was a drum solo using the famous double bassdrum.

As the gig rolled further you could slowly recognise the kind of prog they really like to play, Neo Prog that started at the end of the previous century.

After explaining by Ruud who Louise was and what kind of inspiration she was for the band Timelock started the play the song Louise Brooks Revisited. An actress who tragically died in the seventies due to an alcohol addiction. The band repeated again giving a short introduction to a song called Alicia named after an old Knight Novel.

After this song the band played more songs such as an edited cover version of Living on a Prayer.
It was planned to have another band playing this afternoon but they had to cancel their show. So Timelock got more playtime and they moved forward with some extra songs finally ending with Chasing Echoes again as an encore. Not too bad.
It was a unique afternoon having them again in 't Blok. This prog location called 'Progfrog' started more than 10 years ago and the first band ever that played there was Timelock.

Ending to say the band released a new album in 2022 called Sygn Yn. Listening to it you will discover that The Great Cover Up Story has 6 more parts to discover.

I hope we don't have to wait another 10 years for the next gig.
